Organic Certification in Virginia. Organics are one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture in the country. According to the Organic Trade Association, the organic industry is growing at a rate of more than 20 percent each year. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), recognizing the demand for fostering the organic sector in Virginia, hired the first Organic Specialist in March 2006. The VDACS Organic Specialist assists producers in attaining organic certification through the U S Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP), in addition to helping producers market their organic products. Virginia farmers and processors who wish to sell their products as certified organic, must first undergo the organic certification process which is overseen by the NOP.
